Borehole Casing: Protecting Your Water Source from Collapse and Contamination

Borehole Casing

Casing is the pipe installed inside a drilled borehole to prevent the drilled hole from collapsing and to protect groundwater from contamination.

Casing provides a channel through which water is pumped to the surface. The casing is usually made from steel or uPVC (unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride).

1. Plain Casing

  • A solid pipe with no openings which supports the borehole walls and prevents collapse.
  • It seals off unstable or contaminated upper layers.
  • It directs water from the aquifer to the pump intake.

2. Well Screen Casing

A screen is a casing section that contains slots or perforations that allow groundwater to enter the borehole while keeping sand and gravel out.

  • It allows water from the aquifer into the borehole.
  • It filters out fine sediments.
  • It improves water yield and pump protection.
  • It can be made of steel screens or uPVC screens.
