Borehole Drilling Methods and Legal Permits in Kenya

Drilling Methodologies

At Aquaflow Hydrosystems Ltd, we deploy Rotary Hammer drilling methodology. Depending on the geological formation of your site, we utilize one of two primary techniques:

1. Air Drilling

We use Air Drilling for dry and hard formations. This allows for quick drilling and efficient borehole cleaning using high-pressure compressed air.

2. Mud Drilling

We deploy Mud Drilling in areas with soft, unconsolidated formations. The mud serves two vital purposes:

  • It stabilizes the borehole, preventing the walls from collapsing.
  • It helps to control groundwater pressure during the drilling process.

Permits and Legal Compliance

Borehole completion is an endeavor that calls for the cooperation of all parties involved. Success requires strict legal compliance in obtaining the necessary permits.

There are several key permits required from authorities such as WRA, NEMA, the County Government, and the local Water Service Provider, in addition to a hydrogeological survey report by a licensed professional.

Permits Required to Drill a Borehole in Kenya (and where to obtain them):

1. Hydrogeological Survey Report

  • This is prepared by a licensed hydrogeologist after studying groundwater availability.
  • This report is then submitted to the Water Resources Authority (WRA) for approval.

2. Borehole / Water Use Permit

  • This permit provides the legal authorization to drill and abstract groundwater.
  • It is obtained from the Water Resources Authority (WRA).

3. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) License

  • This is an approval confirming that the project will not harm the environment.
  • It is issued by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

4. County Government Permit

  • This is a local approval which confirms compliance with land use and planning regulations.
  • It is obtained from the relevant or respective County Government office.

5. Letter of No Objection

  • This confirms that the borehole will not interfere with existing public water systems.
  • It is issued by the local Water Service Provider (WSP).
